Today, we recognize Atlus for the Persona, Etrian Odyssey, and Trauma Center franchises, as well as for the years it spent publishing interesting RPGs from smaller Japanese developers that otherwise might never have made it to North America. That history is worthwhile. It also means that when players who grew up loving Social Links and fun school field trips in their JRPGs dig into the publisher’s backlog looking for more of the same, they’ll find a darker side they might not have expected.
