Perhaps one of the most controversial parenting decisions to make as the parent of young adult children is how and when you expect them to be fully independent and not rely on family to support their lives. It can be a difficult time when a lot of people struggle to find their feet, but at the same time, it can massively stunt their growth if they aren't forced to do at least some things by themselves. There has to be a cutoff point somewhere.
A lot of parents find this to be a difficult thing to do with their kids, even if many would argue that some tough love is long overdue. They have spent a lifetime caring for them and struggle with the transition of doing that less, so they have no choice but to develop and mature. The likelihood is that children who have been indulged by mom and dad for as long as they have been alive are not going to react calmly to being told that they have to do more for themselves. It comes as a shock, and they are often clueless as to the next steps.
