This 1961 Volkswagen bus is a Deluxe Samba model that underwent a refurbishment before being acquired by its current owner in 2021. Refinished in red and grey over white vinyl upholstery, the bus is powered by a retrofitted fuel-injected flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. It rides on 15″ steel wheels and is further equipped with a fabric sunroof, front disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, eight skylight windows, six pop-out side windows, and low-back front seats. This Type 2 is now offered in Colorado by the seller on behalf of the current owner’s estate with a Stiftung Volkswagen AutoMuseum Zertifikat, repair manuals, spare parts, and a Montana title in the name of the current owner’s LLC.
The body was factory-finished in Sealing Wax Red (L53) and Beige Grey (L472) and was repainted as part of the aforementioned refurbishment at an unknown time. Details include a fabric sunroof, a chrome-finished front emblem, safari-style front windows, eight skylight windows, six pop-out side windows, and white-painted bumpers with overriders.
The 15″ steel wheels with polished hubcaps are wrapped in whitewall tires, and a spare is stored in the cargo compartment. A Creative Engineering rack-and-pinion steering system has been installed, and braking is provided by front discs and rear drums.
The low-back front seats, ¾-width middle-row seat, and third-row bench are trimmed in white vinyl with gray sides. Color-coordinated material extends to the door panels and side trim, and the cabin is equipped with an analog clock, rubberized flooring, and an overhead ventilation system.
The steering wheel fronts a 70-mph speedometer and a fuel-level gauge. A digital AccuTech tachometer and Engine Watchdog temperature alarm have been fitted to the left of the steering column. The five-digit odometer shows 8k miles, approximately 100 of which have been added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
A fuel-injected flat-four was installed as part of the refurbishment and is said to displace 2,275cc. Street Eliminator cylinder heads are noted to be installed.
The seller tells us that a Pro–Street four-speed manual transaxle has been installed.
The Stiftung Volkswagen AutoMuseum Zertifikat shows factory colors, options, and a build date of May 31, 1961.
