This Maserati Ghibli was completed in July 1970 as one of 125 Spyders manufactured during four years of production. Chassis 1189 was delivered new to Trident Imported Motors in Rosemont, Pennsylvania, and spent time with professor and author Geneva Smitherman before being sold to an Italian car collector in the early 1980s. The car was then moved to Texas at some point in the following 40 years, during which it also underwent a multi-year refurbishment that was completed in the early 1990s. It was purchased by the current owner on BaT in April 2022, and in March 2026, the car was judged at the Antique Automobile Club of America Winter Nationals in Cartersville, Georgia, where it earned an AACA National First Prize. Power is supplied by a 4.7-liter quad-cam V8 with four Weber carburetors and dry-sump lubrication, while shifting is via a ZF five-speed manual transmission. Finished in dark blue with a color-matched removable hardtop, the car rides on 15″ Campagnolo wheels and is further equipped with servo-assisted disc brakes, power steering, and a beige soft top. Inside, beige leather upholstery is accompanied by a wood-rimmed steering wheel, power windows, air conditioning, and a Becker Mexico cassette stereo. This Tipo AM115/S is now offered on dealer consignment by a BaT Local Partner with Maserati Classiche documentation, copies of factory order and build sheets, and an Indiana title.
The Ghibli Spyder debuted at the Turin Motor Show in November 1968, two years after the introduction of its coupe counterpart. Giorgetto Giugiaro handled the open-roof adaptation of his own coupe design as one of his final projects with Ghia. The Spyder shared its front-end styling with the coupe while featuring a larger trunk lid, horizontal fuel filler doors, and a flush metal panel concealing its convertible soft top.
Delivered from the factory in Rosso Cordoba, this example underwent a color change to dark blue as part of the aforementioned refurbishment completed in the early 1990s. A color-matched hardtop was also sourced during the refurbishment and is included in the sale.
Campagnolo bolt-on wheels are wrapped in 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX tires with 2020 date codes, and a matching spare in the trunk compartment wears Pirelli rubber. Braking is handled by servo-assisted ventilated discs at each corner, while suspension combines a coil-sprung double-wishbone front setup with a leaf-sprung solid rear axle. The shock absorbers and the rear axle limiting straps were replaced in 2021.
Originally trimmed in tan, the seats, door panels, console, and lower dashboard have been reupholstered in beige leather. Darker carpeting covers the floors, the dash pad is lined in black suede, and black quilted vinyl trims the undersides of the top cover and trunk lid. Additional amenities include headrests, power windows, Klippan seatbelts, and a Becker Mexico cassette stereo. The air conditioning compressor was replaced in November 2021.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel features a padded horn button and frames a 200-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline, and an oil pressure gauge. The center dash houses gauges monitoring amperage, coolant temperature, oil temperature, and fuel level, the last of which was rebuilt in 2021 along with the clock. The five-digit odometer shows 40k miles, approximately 70 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 4.7-liter Tipo AM115 V8 features an aluminum block and cylinder heads, dual overhead camshafts on each cylinder bank, dry-sump lubrication, four dual-throat Weber carburetors, and four-into-one exhaust headers. Output was factory rated at 310 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 341 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm. The power steering pump was overhauled in November 2021.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF five-speed manual transmission and a Salisbury rear end. There are holes along the Ansa muffler.
