Convener of the Northern League of Democrats, Umar Ardo, has criticised opposition political parties for failing to engage voters at the grassroots level ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently the only party visibly campaigning across the country.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television's Prime Time on Thursday, Ardo described the current political landscape as a "one-sided" campaign environment where opposition parties are largely confined to social media activities.
According to him, anyone travelling around Abuja and other parts of Nigeria would mostly encounter APC campaign activities, while rival parties remain focused on reacting to developments online rather than presenting their own programmes to voters.
"There is a one-sided political campaign. If you drive around Abuja and other states, it is only APC you will see. Other political contenders, you will see them on social media almost always reacting rather than acting and defining the election," Ardo said.
He argued that the trend creates the perception of an uneven contest and weakens the visibility of opposition parties among the electorate.
Ardo urged opposition leaders to move beyond social media engagements and take their campaigns directly to communities across the country. He stressed that parties seeking to challenge the APC must actively promote their own policy agendas instead of waiting to respond to the ruling party's activities.
The political commentator made the remarks as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, which are expected to take place in the coming months.
He maintained that effective grassroots mobilisation remains essential for any party hoping to make a significant impact at the polls.
