The Chargers have a ton going for them as the 2026 season approaches, and much of that has to do with their defense.

Los Angeles has a chance to continue to be one of the league's best defenses under Chris O'Leary, just as they were with Jesse Minter calling the shots over the last two seasons.

The Chargers' defense has a lot on the line, and it’s time to put some bold predictions on the table.

4. Daiyan Henley finishes as the Chargers' leading tackler, named Pro Bowler

We're coming in hot with the first one. The first part of that prediction is far from bold, as Henley led the team in tackles last season with 103. The second part is certainly the definition of bold. He's already shown flashes of playing at a Pro Bowl-caliber level. However, in 2026, Henley is expected to step into a definitive leadership role and be the anchor of the middle for the Chargers' defense. If Henley can have it all come together on a week-to-week basis, Henley has a great chance to earn that nod.

3. Genesis Smith quickly emerges as a pillar of the Chargers' secondary

We have to show the rookie some love. Smith, the fourth-round pick, doesn't have to become a superstar overnight for this prediction to hit. Nonetheless, he possesses elite centerfield range, high-upside ball-hawking instincts, and a modern defensive scheme that maximizes his strengths. Smith will have to continue improving in the tackling department, but the coverage skills should allow him to flourish very quickly.

2. The Chargers finish with a top-five scoring defense

The Chargers finished ninth in this area, and with what I believe is an improved unit, personnel-wise, this is well within reach. Los Angeles has enough talent to make a significant jump defensively, and the biggest reason to believe it is the number of playmakers they have at every level. If health is on their side and the young guys develop quickly, the Bolts could go from simply a good defense to one of the NFL's most difficult units to score against.

1. Akheem Mesidor leads the team in sacks

The rookie edge rusher has shown that he can come into the league and make an immediate impact on the Chargers' defense. Mesidor doesn't have the best player on the defensive line, but he does need to take advantage of the opportunities that come with playing alongside established players like Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu. With Mack and Tuipulotu there, Mesidor could likely benefit from more favorable one-on-one matchups. If he can take advantage of that, there's a realistic path to him leading the team in sacks. In his final college season, Mesidor had 12.5 sacks.
