Kidman’s turn in the 1995 To Die For is a great showcase of just how much range she has. The black comedy film stars her as Suzanne Stone, and was the movie that basically catapulted her into superstardom. Stone is an ambitious TV weathercaster who has sky-high aspirations, and is not afraid to achieve them by any means necessary. It’s a funny-yet-terrifying role that Kidman nails, as she comes off as downright sociopathic at times.
Her role in Gus Van Sant’s movie also earned her a Golden Globe, and rightfully so. When you think of the horror genre, you don’t necessarily think of Nicole Kidman. However, her role in 2001’s The Others is worthy of Scream Queen status. The movie, which is set in 1945, follows the story of a woman and her two children who experience supernatural issues in their manor after new servants arrive. The Others is one of the 2000s greatest entries in the horror genre, and largely carried by Kidman’s incredible job as the fearful and paranoid Grace Stewart.
On top of Kidman’s role, The Others is the perfect watch as we head into the season of spooky movies. It’s filled with beautiful set design, has a tense atmosphere throughout, and features one of the biggest surprise moments in horror movie history.
2) Birth
Kidman’s role in the 2004 psychological drama is one of her most unforgettable roles. The Jonathan Glazer film follows Anna, a widow who meets a young boy claiming to be the reincarnation of her husband. It’s an absolute wild premise that Kidman’s role elevates, as she truly sells the emotions of coming face-to-face with someone claiming to be their deceased partner.
One particular scene in Birth follows Kidman as she sits down at an opera, only to have the emotions of what she’s going through crash down on her in an incredible moment. Kidman’s ability to portray someone going through the confusion of the film’s wild premise is a huge reason it remains the classic it is.
1) Moulin Rouge!
When going through Kidman’s impressive acting resume, it’s hard not to have Moulin Rouge! at the top. The movie is a divisive one amongst audiences even to this day, but it’s hard to argue that Kidman and Ewan McGregor put on an all-time performance in this one. The film follows the story of Satine, a cabaret actress at the Moulin Rouge, and Christian, the British poet who falls in love with the star.
Kidman captures the role of Satine perfectly here. Her beauty, grace, and sophistication all fit perfectly in the movie. She also displays a great range when it comes to performances in a musical, getting to stretch her legs and put on a couple of great shows. In a movie all about a man falling in love with an almost ethereal figure, Kidman plays the role spectacularly.
