The seven-year car loan is no longer an edge case. According to Edmunds, loans of 84 months or longer accounted for more than 25 percent of new-vehicle financing in the third quarter of 2026, a new record. That's up from 23.9 percent in the second quarter and 21.8 percent a year earlier, per Edmunds. One in four new-car buyers is now signing up to make payments well into the next presidential term.

Several financing metrics hit all-time highs in Q3, according to the Edmunds data. The amount financed on a new vehicle reached a record $44,664, up from $44,156 the previous quarter and $42,744 a year ago. Average monthly payments climbed to a record $787, versus $777 in Q2 and $756 a year earlier, Edmunds reports.

Stretching the term out over seven years hasn't tamed the four-figure payment, either. Per Edmunds, 21.2 percent of financed new-vehicle buyers were on the hook for monthly payments of $1,000 or more in Q3 — itself a record — up from 20.3 percent in Q2 and 19.1 percent a year ago.

Longer loans mean more interest, and the total interest paid over the life of a new-vehicle loan hit a record $9,938 in Q3, up from $9,811 the previous quarter and $9,442 a year earlier, according to Edmunds. That climb came without any rate increase. The average APR held at 7 percent, matching both Q2 2026 and Q3 2025, per Edmunds. Buyers are paying more interest purely by borrowing more and taking longer to pay it back.

Down payments, meanwhile, are shrinking. The publication reports new-vehicle buyers averaged $5,554 down in Q3, down from $5,815 in Q2 and $6,021 a year ago. Less money down, more money financed. Edmunds head of insights Jessica Caldwell framed it as adaptation rather than retreat.

"What we're seeing in the data is a remarkable display of consumer resilience against a very stretched financing landscape," she said, noting that buyers are "allocating more of their household budgets to their vehicles, stretching out their loan terms, and becoming more proactive about shopping around for financing."
