I've read books with mediocre prose that I couldn't put down, and beautifully written books that felt like a chore to finish.

Take Michael J. Sullivan, for example. His prose isn't particularly elaborate or poetic, but I love how accessible and easy to follow it is. I'd much rather get immersed in an incredible world and compelling story than spend time untangling overly complicated sentences.

Of course, beautiful prose can elevate a book, but I don't think complicated writing automatically makes something better. In many cases it’s the opposite.

What do you prefer if you had to choose: beautiful and complex prose or simple and accessible writing? What makes prose enjoyable for you?
