Hump Day just got worse and this has put me in a right bad mood. The NEOGEO AES+ has been delayed until September 16, 2027, with PLAION REPLAI blaming a combination of stronger-than-expected demand and ongoing shortages of memory chips.

The retro hardware platform had previously been targeting a November launch, which I excitedly covered here, but PLAION says attempting to stick to that timetable would have resulted in severely restricted availability around the world.

Instead, the company is using the additional time to increase production capacity, secure more components and expand its plans for the system beyond the ten games already confirmed for launch.

Existing pre-orders will remain valid and retain their place in the production queue, while PLAION says there will be no increase to the previously announced prices.

NEOGEO AES+ demand has been much higher than expected

According to PLAION REPLAI, the response to the NEOGEO AES+ since its announcement has significantly exceeded its expectations, both from players and retailers.

That increased demand has resulted in the company expanding manufacturing and investing more heavily in the platform, but it comes at a particularly awkward time for hardware production.

The company specifically points towards worldwide demand for memory chips, driven in part by investment in AI infrastructure, as one of the reasons it cannot produce enough units for its original launch window.

Rather than launch with only a small amount of stock available, the company says it has opted for the sizeable delay in order to support a much larger worldwide release.

“This isn’t the announcement we hoped to make, but the response from the gaming community has been incredible. The level of enthusiasm for NEOGEO AES+ has given us the confidence to think much bigger about the future of the platform. With that comes a responsibility to deliver the launch properly,” said commercial director Ben Jones.

“We explored every option to maintain our original timetable. In the end, we concluded that launching with severely constrained availability would not be fair to our community. Taking additional time allows us to secure more memory chips while expanding our manufacturing. Most importantly, everyone who has already pre-ordered keeps their priority place in the production queue. Had we launched in November, we would not have been able to deliver NEOGEO AES+ to customers at anything close to the scale we believe the community deserves. The truth is that demand far exceeded even our most optimistic expectations. The retro gaming community truly is fantastic.”

More NEOGEO AES+ games are now planned

There is at least one upside to the longer wait. PLAION REPLAI says it intends to use the extra development and manufacturing time to broaden the software roadmap for the NEOGEO AES+.

Ten games have already been announced for launch, but discussions are now underway with additional licensors to bring further titles to the platform.

The company also plans to increase the number of opportunities for players to try the hardware before release, with Tokyo Game Show 2026 set to be the next major public appearance for the NEOGEO AES+.

Visitors will be able to get hands-on with the system and hear more about its growing software line-up.

Early buyers will receive an extra bonus

Anyone who already has a NEOGEO AES+ on pre-order does not need to take any action, and all consoles from the initial launch production run will now include what PLAION REPLAI calls a Founding Supporter Bonus.

Standard and Anniversary Edition buyers will receive a free NEOGEO AES+ Gamepad.

Customers buying the limited-production Ultimate Edition will instead receive a 30% discount voucher that can be redeemed against any NEOGEO AES+ game sold through the official website. As the Ultimate Edition already includes the full launch line-up, the voucher can also be saved for one of the additional games planned for the future.

Ultimate Edition pre-orders will remain valid, while the remaining allocation will continue to be sold until production stock is exhausted.
