Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Abia Central in the 2027 elections, has rejected claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that she remains a member of its party.
The APC insists Nwaogu is still listed in its membership register and participated in its May 18, 2026 senatorial primary, where she emerged runner-up with 12,033 votes.
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, described her as “Mama APC” and maintained that her details remain in both the APC database and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) records.
However, the NDC countered in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Emeka Luis Okoro, stressing that Nwaogu joined the party before INEC’s May 10 deadline for submission of membership registers.
The party declared her candidacy “intact and unshaken,” urging members to disregard APC’s claims and rally behind her.Nwaogu herself dismissed the APC’s position, stating:
“I don’t belong to APC. I left them a long time ago, in early May. Don’t mind them. They are disgruntled. They know I am the one to beat.”
She explained that her resignation was properly done at the ward level and emphasized that she did not participate in the APC primary.
INEC’s final published list confirms Nwaogu as the NDC candidate for Abia Central, while Atuma Emeka is listed for APC.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between the two parties in Abia State as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
