Hey folks
Slight humble brag but also thought this might be a useful thread for adult improvers. I started playing March 2025 as a middle-aged beginner (40s) with zero idea other than basically how the pieces moved. Got very into the game and learning and I’ve steadily progressed to 1820 Rapid chess.com as of today. Don’t take it hugely seriously but I’m pleased with how good I’ve been able to get starting this frustrating game so late in life.
Progress has been in fits and starts (dropping to 500-odd in the first few weeks, steady climb to 800 with a bit of plateau, eventually got to 1200, then plateaued again around 1450-1550, now advanced to 1800 in the last couple of months). By no means an expert but happy to be approaching the “advanced” levels even if I likely can’t advance much further given my late age starting this. Obviously I’ve played a lot of games too (about 5 per days on average over this time plus some blitz and bullet for “fun”, both of which I’m terrible at).
Ask me anything; I’m especially keen to give some insights that might help other “late starters” get to strong intermediate levels or improve…
