ComingSoon is exclusively revealing the trailer for Bot Love, a new film exploring AI companionship. The upcoming documentary by Canadian filmmaker Tyler Funk will air as part of CBC’s The Passionate Eye.

Bot Love is a character-driven documentary exploring relationships between people and AI. One story follows Nick, a young man on the autism spectrum who relies on relationships with AI bots because he struggles to navigate social cues. Another story follows Denise, who uses her relationship with artificial intelligence to rebuild trust after a personal heartbreak.

Besides these subjects, the film will also put the spotlight on the people making new technologies to empower AI relationships. These include Anthony and Bryan Mitchell, who are building a device that combines gaming, pornography, and AI; and Eugenia Kuyda, the CEO of Replika. Subjects also include a behind-the-scenes look at Realbotix and the work of Dr. Roman Yampolskiy, a renowned computer scientist.

“Eugenia, one of the developers, told me AI could be ‘either the biggest existential threat or the most beautiful technology.’ That tension ran through everything we filmed: the real love these relationships offer, and the hard questions they raise about where this technology is taking us,” Funk said.

What do we see in the Bot Love trailer?

The trailer for Bot Love puts the spotlight on its subjects, including users of AI companion apps and their makers. One of the subjects compares her relationship with AI to that of Jesus Christ’s unconditional love. The trailer features a range of opinions from experts and users, with some accepting AI bots as the next frontier of relationships while others question their role in human relationships.

Funk is known for directing the critically acclaimed documentary, Anything for Fame, for which he received a Best British Columbia Director nomination at the Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards.

“I never thought I’d see another technology transform our lives as quickly as the internet did,” Funk said. “AI has arrived with astonishing speed, and people have strong opinions about what it means. For millions of people, AI almost overnight became a work companion, a source of advice, and, for some, a lover. Filming people in these relationships has only deepened the curiosity I felt when we began. Their stories capture the tension at the heart of the film and challenge our preconceptions about love, connection, and whether this technology can make us less alone.”

Bot Love features Denise Valenciano, Nick Wangersky, Dr. Madeleine Ransom, Eugenia Kuyda, Anthony Mitchell, Bryan Mitchell, and more. Funk wrote, directed, and executive-produced the film. Sebastian Mercado serves as an editor and executive producer. Michael Tanko of Grand of Saints and Warriors fame produced the film. Jennifer Chiu and Jemma Titheridge serve as associate producers.

Bot Love is a Grand Scheme Production made with the support of the Canada Media Fund, Rogers Documentary Fund, and Creative BC. It will premiere on October 21, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET on CBC and CBC Gem.
