Verity is already a smashing hit on digital chartsThe Anne Hathaway-led Verity has claimed the top spot on the 2026 iTunes Top Movie Downloads chart (via Popvortex). It sits above Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Dog Stars, The End of Oak Street and Practical Magic 2. The lineup also includes Coyote vs. Acme, Forgotten Island and The Weight.
Michael Showalter brings Colleen Hoover’s bestselling thriller to the screen, with Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett leading the cast. Johnson portrays Lowen Ashleigh, a writer struggling to find her footing who takes a ghostwriting job for celebrated novelist Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway.
However, the assignment takes a dark turn when Lowen uncovers disturbing notes inside the family home, leaving her unsure what to believe. Amazon MGM Studios handled distribution, while Nick Antosca, Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher, Showalter, Jordana Mollick, Hathaway and Hoover shared producing duties.
At the box office, Verity turned a reported $40 million budget into roughly $163.2 million in worldwide ticket sales. That gave the thriller a healthy commercial return before digital purchases added to its earnings. The critical reception has been far less rosy. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 31% critics’ rating, compared with a much stronger 72% audience score. IMDb currently lists the film at 6.0 out of 10.
Reviewers have taken issue with its pacing, shifting tone and twists that fail to land, while some moviegoers have enjoyed the suspense and Hathaway’s performance. Some fans weren’t sold on Johnson’s portrayal, finding her character short on depth and personality. Others felt the sparks never really flew between her and Hartnett, with their romantic moments and intimate scenes reportedly lacking convincing chemistry.
