Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday described Washington’s attempt to open dialogue with Tehran as a “positive step”, saying an Iranian delegation is in Qatar to continue consultations with mediators amid renewed concerns over the possibility of another conflict. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Araghchi said Tehran had studied a letter sent by US Vice President JD Vance last week, while declining to rule out the possibility of another military confrontation. “We do not rule out any possibility regarding the outbreak of war, and we are prepared for all scenarios,” he said, adding that Iran had upgraded its weaponry, addressed vulnerabilities and tested new arms. “Our forces are at the highest level of readiness,” he said. Araghchi acknowledged the impact of US-imposed economic pressure on Iran but insisted that Tehran would not surrender. “We will continue to stand firm and resist and we will overcome this difficult phase through our own capabilities,” he said. The foreign minister also confirmed that an Iranian delegation had travelled to Qatar to continue consultations with mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan, over Tehran’s conditions. “My aide is currently in Qatar to continue consultations. Qatari and Pakistani mediators are continuing consultations regarding our conditions,” he said. However, Araghchi ruled out any immediate meeting with US officials, describing reports suggesting otherwise as media speculation. “We see no need to meet with the Americans at present. Our conditions are clear, and mediators are continuing their consultations regarding them,” he said. The attack comes as spokesperson for the Iranian army Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia said on Saturday that renewed war would “engulf a much wider area” if US President Donald Trump “resorts to another adventure in the region” alongside Israel. “If the US president once again embarks on another military adventure in the region under pressure from and inducement by the Zionists, the flames of war will undoubtedly engulf a much wider geographical area,” Akraminia wrote on US social media company X. — Mohammad Akraminia (@M_Akraminia) October 31, 2026 “And the end of the conflict will not be in his (Trump’s) hands,” he warned. Citing “the US President’s track record of betraying diplomacy,” Akraminia said the Iranian army is “continuously” enhancing its combat readiness and “closely monitoring” US movements in the region. The visit followed "intensive discussions held by a Qatari negotiating delegation in Tehran, which resulted in a breakthrough in indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington," the newspaper reported, citing the source. The discussions also paved the way for the Iranian negotiating team to accompany the Qatari delegation on its return trip to Doha, according to the report. "If he feels embarrassed or disenfranchised, he will do something bold," a US official told Axios, adding that it is the message being passed to Iranian officials, who are being told their best chance for a deal is now. A White House official rejected the idea, telling the outlet that election results will not factor into Trump's decisions on Iran. The report said Qatari mediators spent more than 12 hours on Friday in Tehran, staying in regular contact with the White House, to restart direct talks between Washington and Tehran. A diplomatic source described "positive progress," and discussions are due to continue on Saturday in Doha. Talks have stalled over competing demands, according to one US official.
