Ben Affleck has publicly condemned the way Warner Bros. handled Zack Snyder’s exit from Justice League, saying the studio used the director’s family tragedy as an excuse to push him out. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Affleck told host Josh Horowitz that the 2017 superhero film remains the lowest point of his career. He pointed to Snyder’s removal and the reshoots that followed.
Ben Affleck reveals why Justice League was the lowest point of his career“Boy, that was s***ty that him being taken off that movie and the reshoots that we did,” Affleck said. “That was the low—if you want the low point of my career, was that.” The official explanation was that Snyder left the project himself after his daughter died by suicide. The Batman actor rejected that version of events when Horowitz asked about the turmoil on set. “The personal thing, you know, somebody’s death by suicide, that eclipses everything. And then the way in which that was, I thought frankly, used as an excuse, I just thought was one of the s***tiest things I’d ever seen, and it was so gross,” he said.
Ben Affleck further said the production taught him a lesson about what not to do. He argued that a studio clashing with its director sinks a film of this scale. “I really saw how not to make a movie like that, which is when the studio is at odds with the filmmaker,” he said. “You’re really making a mistake.” He also spoke about his own state of mind during the shoot. He said he was drinking too much and found it hard to stop, and that he went through a divorce at the same time. Even so, he said those struggles did not hurt the film. “They just happened to be happening at the same time,” he said.
All in all, the actor welcomed Snyder’s eventual release of his own version of the film, calling the director’s route to getting it out “canny.” He said he felt “really happy” for him.
