Bobby Witt Jr. has done something no one else in the history of the award has ever done. Since the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association launched the award in 2005, the Royals shortstop became the inaugural recipient of the 2026 Heart & Hustle Award three times on Friday. He stands alone with three straight wins, leaving behind legends like Craig Biggio who only managed two titles in a row.

A Unique Kind of Star

The award does not just look at how many hits a player gets or how many runs they score. It was created to find the active player who shows the most passion for the game and truly embodies its spirit and traditions. Witt was the Kansas City nominee for each of his first five seasons, proving he fits the bill every single time. He played well and made a real impact in the clubhouse and the local community, which is exactly what the voters were looking for.

His stats from the 2026 season back up the claim that he is a total force. MLB.com Royals reported that across 143 games, Witt compiled 18 home runs, 33 doubles, 45 stolen bases, and a .281 batting average. His 7.0 fWAR led the entire American League and ranked second in all of baseball, trailing only Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs. By hitting at least 10 home runs and stealing 25 bases in each of his first five seasons, he established a unique Major League history record.

Defense That Stands Out

While his bat gets the headlines, his glove is just as important to the story. Statcast data showed Witt’s 24 Outs Above Average led the American League and placed third in the Majors, keeping his defense elite. This kind of two-way excellence is rare, especially for a young player who is only 26 years old. He has turned the shortstop position into his own personal domain while still finding time to help the team win.

The recognition keeps coming for Witt as the offseason moves forward. Yordan Alvarez and Junior Caminero joined him as AL MVP Award finalists, with the result scheduled for next Thursday on MLB Network. He is also a finalist for his third straight Silver Slugger Award at shortstop. Should he take the title, he would be the first AL shortstop to win three consecutive seasons, matching Derek Jeter’s four straight from 2006 to 2009.

Following two consecutive wins of the honor, Witt was also selected as a Gold Glove Award finalist. The final winners for the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove awards will be announced on Nov. 17, closing out a season where Witt proved he is the heart of the Royals.
