Brad Pitt revealed one challenge that he faced while filming emotional scenes in his latest film. Pitt shared the various problems he faced with his co-star, who was a dog named Uber.

Pitt revealed that one of the things that he had to deal with was Uber wandering off while emotional scenes were being shot. He revealed exactly how he got around this dilemma, and what it asked of him as an actor.

Regarding the challenge while working with his dog co-star on Heart of the Beast, Pitt revealed in an Entertainment Weekly interview, “I would have to have dog treats with me, and in the middle of the scene, say it’s an emotional scene, then the dog would start wandering off. I’d have to break and go, ‘Uber, here, buddy. Here you go,’ and then fall right back into the emotion of it all. So I got quite adept at that, which certainly is not first-year stuff.”

What did Brad Pitt say about his canine co-star?

Regarding Uber, who plays Odin in Heart of the Beast, Pitt revealed, “…dogs don’t necessarily know their lines — they’re just there being dogs. I really got to know our hero dog.”

David Ayer, who is directing Heart of the Beast, gave further insight into what the dynamic was between Pitt and Uber, as co-stars and as performers. He said, “Brad really considered himself as a supporting actor to the dog, but he’s also the dog trainer. He has to manage the dog. He has to stay in character, create that presence, do his amazing craft as an actor, and the dog may be over here trying to bite a bee that’s flying past him. So his ability to manage all that was really unbelievable.”

It is conventional wisdom in Hollywood that a production should try to make do without child actors or animals. As revealed in the interview by Pitt and Ayer, animal actors typically have a mind of their own and are likely not going to keep things like blocking and cues in mind. Of course, these impulses can be trained out, but there is only so much an animal can be taught without making it uncomfortable.
