Bryan Cranston says he and RJ Mitte were planning a lunch together only weeks before the latter’s untimely death. Cranston shared the memory in an emotional Instagram post on October 12, saying he feels “deep despair” after losing the man who played his son on screen. Mitte died by suicide at 34.

Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston pays tribute to RJ Mitte

Bryan Cranston revealed that the two had kept in touch long after their series wrapped in 2013. Their last exchange was a simple text thread about getting together. “We were texting each other just a few weeks ago—figuring out when we could meet for lunch,” he wrote. He then reflected on what might have been: “I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future…” Cranston signed off his tribute with four words: “I’ll miss you, son.”

The veteran actor also recalled that Mitte joined the cast at 14 and praised the young actor for handling the demands of the job while living with cerebral palsy. “He never—ever—allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything,” Cranston said. He added that Mitte tackled the tough shooting schedule with determination.

Furthermore, the Breaking Bad star also shared a lighter memory. Mitte took advice from Cranston and co-star Anna Gunn, but the pair often caught him “mischievously ignoring the counsel in order to learn the hard way.” Cranston watched Mitte grow from a raw newcomer on the 2007 pilot shoot into a skilled performer. He noted that Mitte later became a vocal advocate for actors with disabilities and headed a charity supporting the disabled community. “All that promise and potential now is such a loss,” Cranston wrote.

RJ Mitte had spoken warmly about his co-stars in the past. During a 2021 appearance on the Cassius Morris Official podcast, he said the long years together created a family dynamic. He put his admiration for Cranston and Gunn as: “I respect them as much as I respect my mom and my father.” The pair played Walter White and Walter White Jr. across five seasons on AMC, from 2008 to 2013. They last appeared together with the cast at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
