How to prepare for Cape Town’s water outages

The City has advised residents in affected areas to take several precautions before maintenance begins.

These include:

  • Store sufficient water in clean, sealed containers
  • Keep enough drinking water for household members
  • Store additional water for cooking, washing and sanitation
  • Keep taps closed during scheduled interruptions
  • Follow City announcements for updates on maintenance and water tanker locations

Residents should also be aware that water may briefly appear milky or discoloured after supply is restored. The City says this is generally caused by trapped air in the pipes and should clear if the water is left to stand.

The City has apologised for the inconvenience, saying the maintenance forms part of ongoing efforts to improve water infrastructure, manage pressure and reduce water losses caused by leaks and burst pipes.
