When you think of Chinese automobiles, safety isn't the first thing that comes to mind. But in a relatively short amount of time, China's nascent automaking industry appears to have caught up with, and even exceeded, long-established car brands in safety ratings.
We can't buy Chinese cars in America. But they're making a strong push in Europe and the UK, making up 10% and 7%, respectively, of 2025 auto sales. Now Euro NCAP, Europe's equivalent of America's NHTSA, has released crash test results for four new Chinese EVs. If sold in the 'States, the Cupra Raval, the Aion UT and the Geely E2 would be competing with the Mini Cooper, Chevy Bolt or Nissan Leaf EVs. The larger Leapmotor B05 would be competing with the Tesla Model 3 or the Volkswagen ID.4. All four models landed stellar 5-star ratings.
It's worth noting that Euro NCAP's safety standards are more stringent than America's: Euro NCAP factors in what damage vehicles can do when striking pedestrians and cyclists, as well as accident avoidance technologies. To demonstrate, here's footage of them testing the Geely E2:
"The names may be unfamiliar, but when it comes to safer driving, the latest brands from China are setting their sights high and are competing with Europe's established marques," Euro NCAP writes. "New cars continue to enter the European market delivering results comparable to well-known models from European, Korean and Japanese brands. These three new entries from Chinese brands have all achieved the maximum five-star rating."
