Chinese scientists have discovered three exoplanets that challenge the existing understanding of how planets evolve around aging stars, the research team behind the discoveries told the Global Times on Wednesday.
The discovery also raises intriguing questions about the future of our own solar system. In several billion years, the sun is expected to enter its red giant phase. Traditional theories suggest that Earth will most likely be engulfed by the expanding sun, but the new findings highlight the complexity of interactions between aging stars and their planets, potentially offering new insights into planetary survival, although they do not directly change current predictions about Earth's fate, Qian said.
The team first analyzed subtle changes in the brightness of the three exoplanets' host stars - 24 Boo, HD 12648 and TYC 4282-605-1 - using satellite data and asteroseismology, confirming that the stars had entered the core helium-burning stage.
