Clay Matthews has revealed the reason behind his bizarre new look after photos of the former NFL star went viral. The images showed Matthews with an unusually large chin, altered facial features, and a noticeably more muscular appearance.
However, Matthews has now cleared up the confusion on X. Joking that it was “official” he had “some work done,” the former Green Bay Packers linebacker confirmed he has not actually undergone cosmetic surgery. Instead, Legacy Effects—the Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning special effects studio—used makeup and prosthetics to create Matthews’ new appearance. This was done for a new Caesars Sportsbook advertising campaign ahead of football season.
The advertisement plays into the current “looksmaxxing” trend, with Matthews embracing an intentionally exaggerated version of himself.

“I’ve done a lot of things throughout my career, but this was definitely a first,” Matthews said in Caesars’ announcement. “The second I heard the idea, I was in.” He added that “the makeup, the prosthetics, the whole concept was completely over the top.”
Creative agency Fellow Kids developed the campaign, while Hungry Man produced it. It will run across television, digital platforms, and social media throughout football season.
How Clay Matthews’ new look went viralThe mystery began when TMZ photos showed Matthews looking dramatically different while out in public. The images quickly circulated online, with fans trying to figure out what had happened to his face. They compared him to characters such as Johnny Bravo, Thanos, and the Crimson Chin.
Matthews even joined in on the joke by reposting one of the photos and calling the new version of himself “Gigaclay.”

The strange appearance quickly sparked questions online, as fans wondered whether the photos showed a real transformation or an AI-generated look. What initially appeared to be an AI-generated makeover was actually Matthews in character as part of a carefully planned promotional stunt.
