Clayface includes some gruesome moments involving the shapeshifting villain. Fans who have seen the gruesome R-rated DC Studios body horror feature are buzzing about one particular disturbing scene on Reddit.

Several viewers have zeroed in on a claustrophobic mid-flight eyeball surgery sequence, set in an airplane bathroom and featuring lead Tom Rhys Harries. The scene shows his face deteriorating, as the protagonist attempts to cut open his eyelids to deal with the transformation.

Reddit user AggravatingTry4189 praised the film’s body horror, particularly this mirror scene. “That scene stuck with me long after the movie ended. Tom Rhys Harries really sold the desperation without overdoing it,” they wrote.

One viewer, Ruffeep, called the scene “gross” and said it made them feel uneasy. However, they felt the scene lacked urgency because turbulence and flight attendants knocking on the bathroom door did not create enough tension.

AbsoluteXon noted that the airplane sequence isn’t the only scene featuring an eye injury, pointing to an earlier moment “near the start of the movie when his face gets cut up by the mob boss.” The same viewer also mentioned close-up surgery shots near the eyes.

Clayface takes body horror to a disturbing new level

Positioned as the DCU’s first full-fledged horror film, Clayface has earned praise for its practical and special effects, which bring Hagen’s grotesque physical transformation to life.

ComingSoon rated the film 9/10, praising the film for fully embracing body horror. The review noted that the film delivers “some genuinely stomach-churning sequences” and uses practical effects, complemented by CGI, to make Hagen’s disturbing transformation feel more tangible.

Directed by James Watkins, Clayface centers on Matt Hagen, a Hollywood actor whose life takes a disturbing turn after his face is severely disfigured. The horror feature marks another standalone villain tale set in Gotham, following the Joker films and Birds of Prey. James Gunn, however, has signaled towards larger plans for Clayface.

Clayface is now playing in theaters.
