Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub spoke with reporters on Thursday. He explained the workout process before the signing of veteran kicker Justin Tucker.

"Because (Justin Tucker) he is a good kicker. And I've heard he's been out making the rounds, and we talk. All the special teams coaches talk. He had four workouts before we brought—we were his fifth workout, tryout," said Toub, "And the word was that he was hitting the ball great, and I wanted to see it. I always thought he was a great kicker, and those two guys right now, Harrison (Butker) and him, they idolized each other in the league when they were kicking together. He was out there; he did his 10-game suspension, so he was available, and we brought him in. He was one of three kickers that we thought were the best guys out there."

The Chiefs also reportedly worked out free agent kickers Ben Sauls and Harrison Mevis this week before signing Tucker. Toub revealed the intense decision process during the workout.

"I made a grueling workout for these guys. I had a 30 kick, 10 extra points. I had seven kicks over 50; one was a 60-yarder." said Toub, "He made every kick, and not only did he make them, he was accurate. 60 percent of his kicks were inside of a six-foot cylinder in the middle of the uprights. Somebody that's struggling as a kicker is not able to put the ball with that kind of accuracy in 30 kicks. So, he was off the charts good. That's the reason why we signed him to the practice squad."

Tucker didn't play last season but has plenty of experience: 13 NFL seasons, primarily with the Ravens, and an 89.1% career field-goal percentage in 212 games.
