David Fincher has left Netflix. However, fans might still be able to get Mindhunter Season 3. This comes after Fincher decided not to renew his contract with the streaming giant after the current agreement expires in 2027.

As Bloomberg reported, “Fincher isn’t leaving Netflix for a rival studio and could still make his next movie at the company.” These claims come from “people who declined to be identified discussing information that isn’t public,” per the outlet.

Bloomberg also mentioned that Fincher reportedly “doesn’t feel the need to have a large overall deal with any company right now.”

The renowned filmmaker’s exit will happen after his upcoming film, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. The film is a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It will be out in theaters on November 25, 2026, and on Netflix on December 23, 2026.

Netflix is losing exclusivity, not necessarily David Fincher

Amidst all these reports, Fincher’s separation from Netflix is strictly about structural exclusivity rather than burning bridges.

As reports from Bloomberg and Deadline confirmed, the filmmaker doesn’t want to be tied down to an exclusive multi-year pact with any studio right now. He, however, remains open to collaborating with the streamer on a project-by-project basis in the future.

Additionally, Fincher follows a growing list of premium creators who have recently wrapped up their overall deals with Netflix. This includes Noah Baumbach, who is moving to Warner Bros.; Shawn Levy, who chose Disney; and the Duffer Brothers, who went for Paramount.

This comes as the industry moves away from paying massive overhead costs to keep the creators entirely off the open market. Fincher’s pact with Netflix ends around seven years after the director signed an exclusive deal with the streamer in 2020.
