The Coalition has confirmed that DDoS attacks targeting Gears of War: E-Day caused intermittent disconnects, login issues and other online service disruptions during the game’s first weekend live. The studio said its teams were monitoring and mitigating the attacks when it issued an update on October 12.

The confirmation gives players a cause for the connection trouble, rather than leaving it as a vague launch-weekend server wobble. Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6, putting the incident in the game’s first few days on sale.

What The Coalition confirmed

The studio’s update, posted at around 2AM BST on October 12, said the attacks were aimed at its online services. The Coalition did not identify who was behind them, and the confirmed effects it listed were intermittent disconnections, login problems and other service disruptions.

“These issues were due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services,” The Coalition said. It added that its teams were continuing to monitor and mitigate the activity, and that it would provide updates if there were significant changes.

Rock Paper Shotgun and Video Games Chronicle both reported that the DDoS attacks were behind players’ connection and login problems. Insider Gaming also reported the studio’s confirmation. The reports describe disruption to online services, but do not establish that every player or platform was affected.

A distributed denial-of-service attack floods a service with traffic, potentially making it harder for legitimate users to connect. Here, The Coalition’s statement confirms the cause and the symptoms it had observed; it does not name an attacker or say that service had fully recovered.

The timing was awkward: the interruption landed during the game’s first weekend live, only days after its October 6 release. The Coalition said it would continue monitoring and mitigating the activity, with further updates promised if there were significant changes.

That leaves the next concrete marker as the studio’s own service updates. For franchise context, Gears of War 2’s unofficial PC port is another recent development in the series, though The Coalition’s October 12 statement did not outline a longer-term security response.
