Two Sun Belt East rivals meet in Statesboro on a Saturday that doubles as Halloween. App State travels to Paulson Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. ET kickoff against Georgia Southern. This matchup matters more than a typical conference game because it decides who stays alive in the division race. Both teams need a win to keep their hopes for a title shot alive. The series carries a nickname that fans take seriously: “Deeper Than Hate.” That phrase was born from decades of hard hits and close scores, not just marketing fluff.

History shows a tight split in the all-time record. App State leads the series 21-19-1 after 41 meetings, but the recent trend favors the Eagles. Georgia Southern has won the last three games and four of the last five contests. The most recent meeting ended on Dec. 29, 2025, in the Birmingham Bowl, where Georgia Southern crushed App State 29-10. That neutral-site game marked the first time the two programs met in a bowl since moving to FBS. OJ Arnold ran for 152 yards in that bowl win, proving the Eagles could dominate when it counted most.

A Tale of Two Records

App State enters this game with a 5-2 record and a 2-1 mark in the Sun Belt. The Mountaineers rode a high after beating previously unbeaten James Madison 34-31 in overtime on Oct. 22. James London kicked a 40-yard field goal to seal that win in front of a sold-out crowd in Boone. That victory put every team in the East Division at risk of losing the lead. Georgia Southern sits at 3-4 overall but holds a 2-1 record in conference play. Their win over Old Dominion on Oct. 15 snapped a four-game losing streak that looked ugly for a long time.

The Eagles have played the exact same three league foes as App State this season. They beat Coastal Carolina 31-24 and Old Dominion 23-15 but lost at home to JMU 27-24. Their nonconference losses came against strong teams like Clemson and No. 18 Houston. Those tough losses mean their 3-4 record is misleading compared to their actual talent level. Per App State Athletics, the team is ready for a difficult challenge after avenging earlier losses to Coastal Carolina and JMU. The midweek victory against ODU was their last game, giving them 16 days to rest before this showdown.

Quarterback Battles and Key Players

Both squads deal with injury questions at the most important spot on the field. Georgia Southern quarterback Max Johnson is listed as probable to play after leaving the ODU game with a first-half injury. This season, the left-handed offspring of ex-NFL quarterback Brad Johnson has tallied 11 touchdowns. Johnson averages 262.0 yards through the air in his first six starts. If he cannot go, Turner Helton or Weston Bryan will step in as running threats from the backfield. Bryan is the second-leading rusher for an offense that has struggled with depth at running back.

App State quarterback Malachi Singleton started against JMU after missing the second half of the Coastal Carolina game. In that overtime victory, he finished 26 of 40 passes for 271 yards while scoring two touchdowns. The Mountaineers played shorthanded due to injuries at key spots, including left tackle. This week’s availability report lists Devon Manuel as out for the season. On defense, team captain Colton Phares led the way with 13 tackles against the Dukes. Last week, a PFN grade of 99.0 placed him first among FBS linebackers. That defensive effort was the reason App State held JMU to just 92 rushing yards.

The Stakes for the Sun Belt

This game is a battle for the Sun Belt East title. A loss for either team could effectively end their season. The rivalry started in 1932 when South Georgia Teachers beat App State 33-0 in Statesboro. It gained modern status in the 1987 I-AA quarterfinals when App State shut out the Eagles 19-0. The 2022 game was the highest-scoring meeting ever, with Georgia Southern winning 51-48 in double overtime. Three other overtime games have happened between these two, showing how evenly matched they usually are.

Clay Helton is in his fifth season as head coach for Georgia Southern. Dowell Loggains is in his second season leading the Mountaineers in Boone. The winner of this Halloween night clash will likely control their own destiny for the rest of the year. Fans know this series goes back to the days of FCS national titles for both programs. Both teams moved to the FBS and the Sun Belt in 2014 to compete at a higher level. The next chapter of this deep rivalry starts Saturday night in Statesboro.
