If you're a frequent traveler, scoring elite status with a major carrier like Delta Air Lines can make your journeys more relaxing and rewarding.
However, deciding which airline loyalty program benefits you the most is difficult. This is mainly due to the variations between complimentary upgrades, bonus points or miles, lounge access and other valuable perks. Plus, is it even worth pursuing elite status?
This guide breaks down Delta's SkyMiles Medallion program, including its four public elite status tiers, how to earn status in 2027 through both travel and non-travel expenses, and the benefits of each level.
Here is everything you need to know about elite Medallion status in the Delta SkyMiles program.
What is Delta Medallion status?ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUYDelta awards elite status to qualifying SkyMiles members each year. Elite status offers a range of benefits — from seat selection to priority boarding — that make travel more comfortable and convenient.
The airline has four published tiers of elite status:
- Silver Medallion
- Gold Medallion
- Platinum Medallion
- Diamond Medallion
Delta also has an invite-only status tier called Delta 360. While the airline doesn't publish its standard qualification criteria, big spenders could get an invitation to this very special club. Delta also says, "Members that have reached the 5 Million Miler milestone will receive an annual complimentary invitation for Delta 360° Membership." That's a pretty sweet perk.

How do you earn Delta Medallion status?Flyers earn Medallion status based on their eligible activity during the preceding calendar year. Delta tracks travelers' activity through Medallion Qualification Dollars, which they earn by flying with Delta and its partner airlines, spending on select Delta SkyMiles American Express cards and booking Delta Vacations packages.
For Delta-marketed flights operated by Delta or a partner airline, members generally earn 1 MQD for every dollar spent on the eligible ticket price (including the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges but excluding government-imposed taxes and fees). For eligible partner-marketed flights, MQD earnings are generally based on a percentage of the distance flown and the purchased fare class, according to Delta's published partner earning charts.
Note: Delta Main Basic tickets generally don't earn MQDs or qualify for Medallion upgrades.

You can also earn MQDs on eligible award tickets and through everyday spending on the Delta SkyMiles Platinum, Platinum Business, Reserve and Reserve Business American Express cards. All four cards offer an annual 2,500-MQD Headstart, while eligible spending earns 1 MQD per $20 on Platinum cards and 1 MQD per $10 on Reserve cards.
Your status is valid through Jan. 31 of the following year. For example, travelers who qualify in 2026 will earn 2027 Medallion status, which would be valid through Jan. 31, 2028.
You must meet the applicable Medallion Qualification Dollar thresholds each calendar year to maintain that status.
What are the Delta Medallion status levels and benefits?BEN SMITHSON/THE POINTS GUYDelta used to have several ways to earn status, but now the carrier uses only MQDs as qualification criteria. Below are the requirements to obtain 2027 Medallion status:
- Silver Medallion: SkyMiles members who have earned 5,000 MQDs
- Gold Medallion: SkyMiles members who have earned 10,000 MQDs
- Platinum Medallion: SkyMiles members who have earned 15,000 MQDs
- Diamond Medallion: SkyMiles members who have earned 28,000 MQDs
Delta did not raise the status requirements for 2027 status.

Can a credit card help earn Delta status?THE POINTS GUYTo make it easier to earn elite status, Delta gives eligible frequent flyers who also hold the following cobranded cards a head start on MQD metrics with a boost of 2,500 MQDs (per eligible card type) toward status qualification at the start of the year (and each year thereafter, until further notice):
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card
Since the MQD head start is awarded per eligible card type, you'll enjoy more than one 2,500 MQD boost if you have multiple eligible cards. Additionally, you'll be able to enjoy bonus MQDs based on everyday spending on these cards.
Specifically, the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Amex and the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Amex will accrue 1 MQD for every $10 spent. Meanwhile, the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Amex and the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Amex will accrue 1 MQD for every $20 spent.
Technically, you could earn Delta Medallion status without ever stepping on a plane, simply by putting enough eligible spending on a cobranded credit card. But that doesn't necessarily make it a good strategy,
Even with the MQD Headstart, reaching the higher status tiers through credit card spending alone requires a large financial commitment. Before putting everyday purchases on a Delta card to chase status, consider whether the rewards and benefits justify the cost, when there are lots of other travel credit cards that could offer better returns for you personally.
Is Delta Medallion status worth it?Delta One cabin on Delta Air Lines Airbus A350-1000. DELTA AIR LINESIf you earned Delta elite status in 2025, it's valid through Jan. 31, 2027. If you qualify in 2026, your status will last until Jan. 31, 2028.
It's critical to consider how much you'll be traveling in the future to decide if Medallion status is worth it. If you push hard to reach Diamond Medallion status, the valuable perks outlined above apply only when traveling.
With the high MQD requirements, you would need to spend a significant amount of money with the airline or on a cobranded card to earn this top-tier status. So, you should ensure you're traveling enough to enjoy it.
That said, if you wind up within striking distance of the next tier, consider whether the benefits are worth it for you personally. There's no reason to go out of your way for perks that don't matter to you. Pursuing elite status with an airline you can't realistically fly regularly isn't a great move. Look at Delta's offerings from your home airport and whether it would be feasible to rely on that airline.
This elite-status hobby has many trade-offs, and one of the most common is deciding whether to use your preferred airline or hotel chain when neither is the most convenient nor the cheapest. Would you book a one-stop Delta flight if Southwest Airlines had a cheaper, nonstop option? If the answer is no, it may not be worth going out of your way to earn Delta elite status (or any elite status, for that matter).
The final consideration involves travel rewards credit cards. Many airline cobranded cards offer perks that mirror what you'd enjoy as an elite member. For example, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card includes a free checked bag worldwide and a second checked bag when flying domestic, priority boarding and a 20% inflight savings in the form of statement credit. The card has no annual fee for the first year, then a $150 annual fee (see rates and fees).
Meanwhile, when you fly with Delta, the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card provides 15 Sky Club lounge visits each year (Feb. 1 through Jan. 31). Cardmembers also qualify for various complimentary seat upgrades and receive an annual companion certificate (valid for round-trip domestic and short-haul international flights to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America in economy, Delta Comfort, Delta Premium Select or first class). To earn unlimited Sky Club visits each year, the total eligible purchases on the card must equal $75,000 or more between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 each calendar year.
If you can pay a flat annual fee for one of these cards and gain access to perks that matter to you without going out of your way to earn elite status, that may be a good plan.
Bottom lineDelta Medallion status can make flying more comfortable, particularly if you're a frequent Delta customer who can take advantage of all the perks. But the value of those perks really depends on how often you fly and how much you're willing to spend to earn them.
For most travelers, the goal shouldn't necessarily be "reach Diamond Medallion." Instead, focus on the status tier that offers benefits you'll actually use and avoid spending more or booking less convenient flights just to earn a higher level of status.
If you're considering switching your loyalty, we hope this detailed review of Delta's elite status program has helped you make your decision.
