A new HBO documentary movie about Dennis Miller arrives on streaming today. The film offers a closer look into the comedian and talk-show host’s famous stint as a football commentator.
Miller Night Football is streaming on HBO Max starting today, September 29. Directed and edited by Jeff Cameron, it is an HBO Original documentary film from NFL Films. The film serves as the first in a series of 2026 “NFL Shorts.”
Dennis Miller’s unexpected NFL chapter gets a closer lookAccording to the official logline, Miller Night Football chronicles Dennis Miller’s “unlikely arrival in the “Monday Night Football” (MNF) broadcast booth in 2000, alongside veteran sportscaster Al Michaels and former NFL quarterback Dan Fouts.”
The synopsis adds, “Intended to reinvigorate the iconic television franchise and attract a broader audience, Miller’s addition, and his distinctly cerebral brand of humor, was met with both intrigue and skepticism across sports and television.”
The documentary features interviews with Miller along with former MNF broadcasters Al Michaels, Dan Fouts, and Melissa Stark. Other notable participants include former MNF producers David Israel and Fred Gaudelli, former ABC Sports President Howard Katz, and comedian Dana Carvey.
Featuring vintage MNF footage, Miller Night Football explores “one of the most ambitious experiments in sports broadcasting history.” When ABC’s Monday Night Football was struggling with declining ratings in 2000, the network decided to take a leap of faith and hire Miller as a commentator.
In an interview at the time, MNF’s Al Michaels recalled how Miller’s vast NFL knowledge surprised everyone during auditions. “It was way beyond what we expected,” he said. “I had no idea that he knew as much about football as he did. He made points that other analysts we brought in never made, and his points were more salient, more interesting, and better stated.”
Miller Night Football is executive produced by Ross Ketover, Keith Cossrow, Ken Rodgers, and Jessica Boddy for NFL Films. Exec producers also include Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Bentley Weiner for HBO.
