Why design education must reconsider the kind of student it imagines.

For decades, design offered artistically inclined students an appealing compromise. They could pursue a practical career without giving up creativity. Someone with visual talent learned typography, composition, color, image-making, and a collection of professional tools. With enough skill, that student could turn artistic ability into commercial work without becoming a traditional studio artist.

That understanding of the designer still influences how programs recruit students and what many students expect from the profession. Design is often presented as a field where creative people can produce visually compelling work while building a recognizable career. The appeal is understandable, and generations of exceptional designers entered the profession through exactly that route.

I know this because it’s how my journey began, along with countless others. I was good at drawing, interested in art, and attracted to a profession that offered a practical outlet for my creativity. That foundation served me well, but it would not have been enough for the career I eventually built. As the profession changed, I learned to code, moved into user experience and interface design, honed my strategic and business thinking, and developed an interest in the ethical and theoretical questions raised by technology. My career evolved because I did not remain confined by the traditional designer persona.

After two decades in professional design and now as a design educator, I see a growing mismatch between that persona and the profession students are preparing to enter. Students who are comfortable producing visual work are not always interested in research, systems, ethics, technology, or the reasoning that precedes a design decision. Those subjects can feel secondary to the creative work they expected to do, even though designers are now routinely responsible for them.

Artistically inclined students still have a place in design, and replacing them with technically inclined students would solve nothing. Likewise, coding ability, business knowledge, or analytical skill does not automatically produce a good designer. What matters is whether students are curious about the questions that now surround the artifact, including how it functions, whose interests it serves, and what consequences it produces.

It is easy to point the finger at AI, but the profession’s transformation began much earlier — AI has simply made it more visible. Designers increasingly work on digital products that require attention to behavior, navigation, accessibility, technical constraints, business goals, and decisions affecting entire systems. While traditional design has always involved solving problems, the scope of those problems and the designer’s responsibility for addressing them have expanded.

Labor data offers one practical indication of where the profession is moving. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment for graphic designers to decline 2 percent between 2025 and 2035, while employment for web and digital interface designers is projected to grow 6 percent. The agency also expects automated tools, including AI, to make graphic designers more productive and reduce the number of workers needed.

In 2025, the median annual wage for graphic designers was $62,960, compared with $104,000 for web and digital interface designers. Technology-sector salaries may account for part of the difference, but the market's direction is clear. Employers are paying more for designers who can work with digital products, technical systems, user behavior, and product strategy than for those whose expertise is primarily visual. Traditional visual skills still have value, but they no longer command the same demand or economic value on their own.

Hiring research reported by Figma reinforces this broader shift. While visual polish remained important to 58 percent of hiring managers, it was only one capability within a much wider profile. More than 45 percent also identified collaboration, systems thinking, and product strategy as critical, while 73 percent reported increasing demand for proficiency with AI tools and 79 percent for knowledge of AI product design. Employers are not abandoning visual craft. They are seeking designers whose visual ability is joined with technical, strategic, and systemic knowledge.

I see the mismatch most clearly when students reach the parts of a project that precede the visual work. They may be eager to design screens but impatient with research, resistant to technical constraints, or inclined to treat strategy as documentation to complete before the real design begins. Technology is sometimes learned well enough to operate but not well enough to question.

These reactions are not simply failures of effort. Many students entered the field expecting a professional outlet for artistic creativity. A discipline increasingly concerned with behavior, systems, evidence, and consequences can feel like a change in the terms of that promise.

Changing the curriculum without changing the recruitment pitch leaves that mismatch intact. Programs that present design primarily as a practical outlet for creativity will attract students who expect creative expression to organize the profession. Their frustration is understandable when the education they encounter differs from the career they were promised.

Design programs should therefore reconsider what they advertise and what they evaluate during admissions. A visual portfolio can remain part of the process without serving as the only meaningful evidence of potential. Applicants could also explain how they understood a problem, considered conflicting needs, or changed a decision after encountering new evidence. An imperfect artifact supported by thoughtful reasoning may reveal more than a polished portfolio organized around personal style.

Recruitment could also extend beyond students who already identify with art. Future designers may come through psychology, computer science, business, sociology, communication, or philosophy because they are interested in behavior, technology, organizations, culture, or ethics. Their entry would expand the design field's capabilities rather than displace its artistic students.

The same shift should appear in teaching and evaluation. Projects could require students to defend consequential decisions rather than merely present finished work. Critiques could examine how they responded to conflicting user, technical, and organizational needs. Capstone projects could include evidence of research, iteration, ethical reasoning, and collaboration alongside the final artifact. This would not diminish visual craft, but it would place craft within the broader judgment contemporary design requires.

The profession needs people who can understand consequences not visible in the final artifact. For example, decisions that make an interface simpler, faster, or more personalized may also transfer control from its user to the system behind it. Designers must understand whose interests those systems represent and what users give up for convenience. Such consequences cannot be judged by looking at the screen alone.

This type of responsibility also explains why design will survive AI—despite all the doom and gloom. Generative systems can produce graphics, layouts, interfaces, and variations with extraordinary speed, reducing the number of people needed for visual production. But producing possibilities is not the same as determining which are worth pursuing. Organizations will still need designers to define the purpose, decide whose needs take priority, evaluate consequences, and accept responsibility for the result.

In this new landscape, creativity also takes on a broader meaning. It can appear in framing a problem, exposing a hidden assumption, reorganizing a system, or deciding not to build a proposed product. A beautiful design artifact may demonstrate exceptional craft while serving a system that should never have existed.

Designers whose primary value comes from operating tools and producing polished artifacts will increasingly compete with systems capable of doing that work. Those who can interpret complex situations, make defensible decisions, work across disciplines, and direct those systems toward worthwhile purposes occupy a less replaceable position.

The future of design education depends on more than revised courses, certificates, and new software. Programs must reconsider the person they imagine when they describe a future designer. Artistic imagination remains valuable, but it must be joined by curiosity about research, technology, systems, and the consequences of design decisions.

Design education should continue to welcome students who love making beautiful things. But it must stop implying that this desire alone defines a designer. The profession’s future belongs to people who are curious about emerging technologies, willing to adapt as the field changes, and capable of determining not only what can be made, but what should be made, whom it serves, and what it sets in motion.
