A major Disney remake starring Dwayne Johnson is getting a second chance after a disappointing theatrical run. The digital release now puts the spotlight back on a movie that struggled to win over critics, even as audiences showed considerably more affection for it.

Dwayne Johnson’s Moana is now streaming on digital

Fans can now bring Disney’s live-action Moana home. The remake became available for digital purchase on Sept. 8 through services such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango. Those who prefer physical copies will have to wait until Oct. 6, when 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD editions arrive alongside a limited SteelBook centered on Dwayne Johnson’s Maui and Catherine Lagaʻaia’s Moana.

The bonus package adds plenty for longtime fans to dig into, from production footage and interviews with the cast and crew to looks at the costume work behind the remake. Sing-along features also spotlight Lin-Manuel Miranda’s songs. Disney is additionally releasing a digital three-film bundle today that combines the two animated movies with the new live-action version, followed by a DVD release on Oct. 6.

Moana’s latest voyage expands her world far beyond the familiar shores of Motunui. Thomas Kail directs the live-action remake, with Catherine Lagaʻaia leading the journey as Moana and Dwayne Johnson once again bringing Maui to life.

Rena Owen, John Tui, Frankie Adams and Jemaine Clement round out the cast. Lagaʻaia earned particular praise for her performance, even as the overall remake struggled to connect with audiences.

The financial picture was considerably less impressive. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie brought in approximately $126.2 million from North America and another $189.3 million overseas, finishing at about $315.5 million worldwide. With production reportedly costing around $250 million, that theatrical haul fell well short of what Disney would expect from such an expensive franchise release.

Reviews explain much of the disconnect. IMDb currently lists Moana at 5.8/10 from about 14,000 ratings, while Rotten Tomatoes gives it 32% from critics but 88% from verified audiences.
