The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved 13 development projects with a total outlay of BDT 15,823 crore 57 lakh.
These projects were approved at an ECNEC meeting held on Tuesday (September 29) at the Cabinet Room of the Bangladesh Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Tareq Rahman.
Of the total cost of the approved projects, government funding accounts for BDT 10,118 crore 33 lakh, project loans for BDT 5,252 crore 96 lakh, and the respective agencies’ own funding for BDT 382 crore 28 lakh. Among the 13 projects, eight are new, three are revised, and two involve proposals for extension of their tenure.
Approved Projects
Two projects from the Ministry of Health Services and Family Welfare are ‘Integrated Health System Response to Fight Against TB, HIV/AIDS and Malaria in Bangladesh’ and ‘Establishment of Patuakhali Medical College and Hospital, Patuakhali (1st Revised)’.
The Ministry of Finance’s ‘Financial Sector Support Project-2 (FSSP-2)’ and the Ministry of Social Welfare’s ‘Development and Expansion of Existing Physical Disability Training Centers in Chittagong, Khulna and Rajshahi Divisions and Expansion of Hostel Building and Capacity Building for Mentally Challenged Children’s Institution Raufabad, Chittagong’ projects have been approved.
Two projects from the Ministry of Water Resources are ‘Integrated Flood and River Management and Drainage System Development in Choto Feni and Bamoni River Basins including Musapur Regulator Construction (Part-1)’ and ‘Protection of Shibpur, Dhonia and Medua areas of Bhola Sadar and Daulatkhan Upazilas from Meghna River Erosion’.
The Ministry of Land’s ‘Establishment of Digital Land Management System in 3 City Corporations, 1 Municipality and 2 Rural Upazilas through Digital Land Survey (2nd Revised)’ project has also been approved.
Two projects from the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives are ‘Widening and Strengthening Important Upazila and Union Roads in Rangpur Division’ and ‘Rural Infrastructure Development in Madaripur, Shariatpur and Rajbari Districts (3rd Revised)’.
Additionally, the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism’s ‘Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Expansion Project (Phase 1) (3rd Revised)’ and the Ministry of Home Affairs’ ‘Enhancement of RAB’s Technical and Technological Capabilities (2nd Revised)’ projects have been approved.
Two projects from the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources are ‘Land Acquisition for Construction of Solar Power Plant in Sonagazi, Feni District’ and ‘Expansion of Power Network in Three Hill Districts’.
Further 15 Projects Notified
The ECNEC meeting was also informed about 15 projects with costs less than BDT 50 crore, which were approved under the Planning Minister’s own authority.
These projects include the expansion of buildings for Bangladesh International School and College in Dhaka Cantonment, infrastructure development for BAF Shaheen College, infrastructure development for Alikadam Cantonment Public School and College, and establishment and infrastructure development of government primary schools in Dhaka Metropolitan Area and Purbachal.
Additionally, there are projects for establishing BSTI regional offices in 10 districts, the Rupsha 800 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant, Mirpur UCEP-Labour and Employment Institute, Climate-Smart Agriculture and Water Management, and Flood Control and Bank Protection of the Dharla River in Kurigram.
Bank protection of the Kushiara River in Habiganj, road and drainage development in Mymensingh City Corporation, safe water supply nationwide, water supply and sanitation in 23 municipalities, and the Bhuyapur-Tarakandi district highway development project are also on this list.
The project for purifying surface water and supplying it through pipelines, along with developing a safe sanitation system in Chapainawabganj Municipality, was also informed to the meeting.
