Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney has unveiled the first trailer for Musk, a four-year investigative portrait detailing the rise and controversial legacy of tech billionaire Elon Musk.

The documentary offers a thorough and unvarnished examination of Elon Musk, tracing his journey from his roles as CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter to his emergence as a polarizing global figure.

Check out the Musk trailer below:

The trailer opens up with a rocket launch, as people describe the tech mogul as the “greatest living investor” and a “real-life Iron Man.” While the rocket is in Earth’s orbit, their comments turn slightly negative.

As the trailer goes on, the rocket is shown plunging towards Earth. While this is happening, Musk is called “capricious, manifestly cruel, and selfish,” thereby capturing the inventor and businessman’s legacy.

Alex Gibney’s four-year journey to understand Elon Musk

To capture the rise of one of the greatest minds on Earth, Gibney spent four years capturing Musk’s persona. According to IBTimes, the documentarian revealed that the project began in early 2023. He previously hesitated to work on it but a close colleague convinced him to analyze Musk as a defining political and economic force of the century.

Gibney described Musk as a genius. The director said, “His genius, if there is a genius, is that he is not an inventor; he’s an investor. His genius is stock pumping.”

According to him, the investor’s ability to promote a compelling future is central to his influence, values, and business. Along with showcasing the brighter aspects of his career, Gibney also captured the public promises that the Tesla CEO could not fulfill during his four-year study.

Gibney’s 3-hour-and-52-minute documentary is set to premiere on September 8, 2026, at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The documentary is scheduled for a U.S. theatrical release on October 16, 2026, before streaming exclusively on HBO Max.
