Formula 1 has announced it will return to Africa for the first time in nearly 40 years after signing a deal with Rwanda to host a race by the early 2030s.
A new track constructed in Bugesera on the outskirts of Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, will stage the new race that will be known as the African Grand Prix presented by Visit Rwanda after signing a 10-year deal.
No year has been determined for the first staging of the event, with F1 saying it will join the calendar in the “early 2030s”.
Should that be as soon as 2030, it would mark 37 years since F1 last raced in Africa, when Kyalami in South Africa hosted its final grand prix in 1993. Since then, the sport has expanded its calendar rapidly across Asia and North America, making Africa the only continent that does not feature on its schedule.
