Fantastic Four fans hoping to see an original cast member return in Avengers: Doomsday will likely be disappointed. While the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover film will showcase the heroes, a long-rumored cameo from a past Mister Fantastic actor appears to be off the table.
In an interview shared on Instagram, Ioan Gruffudd addressed speculation about reprising his role as Reed Richards. The actor, who played the superhero in two Fox movies, warned fans against expecting a surprise appearance in the December 18 release.
When the interviewer expressed hope that Gruffudd might surprise fans, the actor replied, “You won’t be pleasantly surprised, I’m afraid.” He clarified that the film would focus on the new Fantastic Four, adding, “They’ll carry on the story.”

However, Gruffudd left room for future possibilities, saying, “Who knows? You just don’t know where this universe is gonna go.” His partner, Bianca Wallace, also joined the discussion and pointed out the fans’ interest in seeing him return. She said, “But everyone wants it. They should just give the fans what they want.”
Gruffudd also reflected on the lasting connection audiences have with his portrayal of Reed Richards. He said, “It was me everywhere I go, you know, 20 years later. So it’s a testament to how strong the movie was.”
The actor also explained that he prepared for the role by studying the source material. Gruffudd said, “I came to him from the comic books, and my research was reading the original comics.” He added that fans describing his portrayal of Reed as comic-accurate was “a huge compliment.”
