The Federal Ministry of Education has cancelled all admissions into the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna, for its National Certificate in Education (NCE) and degree programmes for the 2026 academic session.
The action follows regulatory breaches involving admissions, accreditation and university affiliations. In a statement issued on Saturday by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the ministry warned prospective students, parents and the general public against seeking admission into unauthorised NCE and degree programmes at the institute.
It directed NTI to discontinue all university affiliations and degree-awarding arrangements, stating that the institute is not authorised to award NCE or university degrees. No further admissions into the affected programmes whether full-time, part-time or through Distance Learning Studies (DLS) are permitted.
The public was strongly advised not to apply, accept admission offers or make any payments for such programmes. The directive stems from violations of the Ministerial Operational Guidelines issued on 12 September 2025.
The ministry clarified that NCE admissions must comply with Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) requirements and the accreditation standards of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has also been instructed to notify affected universities and ensure compliance with the order ending NTI’s degree-awarding arrangements. To protect students already enrolled, the NCCE will conduct a comprehensive accreditation of existing NCE II–IV Distance Learning programmes and study centres across the six geopolitical zones.
Eligible students may complete their programmes subject to the outcome of the accreditation and other regulatory requirements. The ministry reiterated that NTI’s statutory mandate remains teacher training, retraining, in-service development and continuous professional development.
This includes pedagogical capacity-building and the three-to-six-month Special Abridged Programme for serving teachers who hold non-education degrees, enabling them to meet the professional requirements for registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
Officials stressed that the intervention aims to protect students, uphold academic standards and prevent prospective applicants from enrolling in unapproved programmes. Members of the public were urged to verify the accreditation and admission status of any programme through the relevant regulatory authorities and official government channels before making enrolment or payment decisions.
