An allegedly intoxicated driver who crashed his vehicle and then fled into a swamp carrying two young children had to be rescued by police in Florida.
In a video released by the Lakeland Police Department of the incident that happened last Wednesday, officers at the scene are seen frantically trying to track down the driver and the kids.
Police said the man was involved in a single-vehicle rollover crash after he drove through a road-closure sign and sandbags, stopping at a construction area.
Police said the driver fled on foot before officers arrived.
After noticing two child safety seats inside the vehicle, cops immediately began searching the area as they were unable to confirm if the children had been occupants in the car.
Drone tracks down trio
Police said a drone operator located the driver and two children about 30 minutes into the search.
Drone footage showed the man struggling to cross the swamp while carrying the kids. He falls, crawling along the marsh as the children trail behind him.
The video then cuts to police bodycam footage, showing an officer calling out to the trio. Moments later, the children’s cries are heard as the man’s body comes into view from the darkness.
“Give me the baby,” the cop orders, with the man handing him an infant.
He then tells the man to hand over the other child.
Police said Isaac Kinsey, 27 was arrested and charged with eight misdemeanour offences and three felony offences, including two counts of negligent child abuse with great bodily harm.
The two children, aged 2 and 10 months, were taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released.
