For 160 years, Uchida Shōten has made building hardware in Fujisawa, on a stretch of the old Tōkaidō road that was once Fujisawa-juku, the sixth post town of the Edo period. Its new head office, designed by Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, borrows the proportions of the machiya townhouses that once lined that road: just over six metres wide, 33 metres deep and 9.5 metres tall, under the 10-metre height limit yet taller than a traditional townhouse.
