Giancarlo Esposito has opened up about which X-Men character he would like to play, following earlier fan speculation. The veteran actor was once linked to play Professor X after fans shared photoshopped images of him as the mutant mentor.
Speaking with Polygon ahead of The Gentlemen Season 2 premiere, the Breaking Bad star addressed the speculation. “Professor X, just to be clear, was a fan casting idea that got spread very quickly, and it was an idea that appealed to me because of who Professor X is,” Esposito said.
However, Charles Xavier is not the only X-Men character that interests him. The 68-year-old revealed that he likes Magneto and would be interested in playing the powerful mutant if the opportunity arose. “I like Magneto. I like that world. That world has its own rhythm to it that is fantastical in some ways,” he said.
The Emmy Award winner named another character he likes to portray. “Freeze is another one that I would like to be,” the 68-year-old added.
While Marvel chose Christopher Abbott for Professor X in the upcoming X-Men reboot, the studio did not announce the cast for Magneto.

Esposito played the antagonist in the 2025 Captain America film, led by Sam Wilson. The actor did not wear the comic-accurate costume of the Serpent leader. In the same interview, Esposito said he wanted to explore more of Voelker’s comic-book background. “There’s a story there which I didn’t have the ability to tell in what I had to do in Captain America 4,” the 68-year-old said.
Since the character does not die in the movie, his survival leaves open the possibility of a future MCU appearance.
