Marissa Shafer battled Irene Smith in a marathon No. 2 singles match, earning a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 win that clinched a 3-2 win for West Scranton over Honesdale on Wednesday in a Lackawanna League Division II girls tennis match.

The Shafer-Smith match lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes.

“It was super tough,” Shafer, a junior, said about rallying back after being down a set in a phone interview. “My muscles were cramping up, but I had fun. I just kept my head up. I had a really good mindset going into the second set. It was mostly my mindset, but also picking up strategies that worked against my opponent. I hydrated a lot, and just told myself in my head that I had this. I tried my best not to be nervous. I had to trust all of my shots and have no hesitation.

“It felt really good to win it. I was really relieved.”

Chiara Pugliese won at No. 1 singles, and Alyssa Heffron won No. 3 singles for West Scranton. Pugliese defeated Alexis Mazzotta, 6-1, 6-2, and Heffron beat Tarynn Murray, 7-6 (1), 6-2.

Honesdale won both doubles matches. Sophia Bond-Surie MacDonald and Evelyn Bond-Vera Rickard posted straight-set wins.
