Santa Monica Studio has confirmed a delay for God of War Laufey, its PS5 exclusive. The studio shared the new date on its social channels rather than in a separate press release.
The studio will use the extra months for finishing touches and to bring the game to its fullest potential, according to Video Games Chronicle. It also promised more updates soon.
Pre-order customers now wait until May for the gameAnyone who bought early had been planning around a February launch. The Collector Box adds another wrinkle. It is sold only direct from PlayStation, in very limited numbers. Pre-orders for it opened at 10:00 a.m. local time on October 13, 2026.
The box does not include the game, which is sold separately. Box buyers therefore need a separate copy of a game that now arrives in May.
The February date had also put Laufey in a crowded stretch. When it was set, the game was one of several big releases due within two weeks of each other, GameSpot reported. The others were Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival, Fable and Metro 2039.
The new date keeps the disc release on trackPlayStation revealed Laufey as the closing announcement of its June 2, 2026 State of Play. That show ran more than 60 minutes. Players control Faye, Kratos’s Norse wife and Atreus’s mother, who dies just before the 2018 God of War. That makes Laufey the first mainline God of War game led by someone other than Kratos. PlayStation’s description has Faye fighting through an afterlife of the gods to protect the people she loves.
The original launch date came from a San Diego Comic-Con panel on Friday, July 24, 2026, in Ballroom 20. Game director Ariel Lawrence and head of creative Cory Barlog led it. The panel also confirmed a physical disc release. Barlog added that the next God of War will star Kratos again.

Disc timing matters for this game. Santa Monica Studio confirmed on July 10, 2026 that Laufey will be sold on disc. That meant it had to launch before Sony’s cutoff. Sony’s policy, announced on July 1, 2026, exempts games that come out on disc before that deadline. A May release keeps Laufey well ahead of the line.
