Godzilla Minus Zero is already making noise with its Rotten Tomatoes score. The new Godzilla movie has impressed critics following its premiere. However, its current RT score falls slightly behind Godzilla Minus One.
Why Godzilla Minus Zero’s Rotten Tomatoes score is still a major achievementGodzilla Minus Zero premiered at the 2026 New York Film Festival on September 26. Following its festival premiere, the movie quickly received strong reviews.
Godzilla Minus Zero currently holds a critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. That score is impressive, but it falls short of Godzilla Minus One. The 2023 original currently holds a 99% critics score and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite the difference, the sequel’s 95% score remains a strong early achievement. Critics have already praised the movie for its scale, themes, characters, and monster action. David Gonzalez of The Cinematic R wrote, “You can use every adjective imaginable to describe Godzilla Minus Zero, but its sheer scope finds a way to surpass them all. A Kaiju-sized W of a sequel!”
Clint Worthington of RogerEbert wrote, “[It] doesn’t quite reach the miraculous highs of its predecessor, but the old boy still has plenty of bite.” Andrew J. Salazar of Discussing wrote, “Bold, audacious, and angry in ways Hollywood blockbusters are never allowed to be, Takashi Yamazaki has crafted a rare sequel that delivers a different kind of thrill than its predecessor. It’s a staggering achievement in its own right.”
Carla Hay of Culture wrote, “Godzilla Minus Zero is a worthy sequel, but some monster movie fans might be disappointed that the majority of the film is about defense planning instead of action scenes. However, the action is spectacular, and the human stories are compelling.”
The sequel follows the massive success of Godzilla Minus One. The 2023 movie earned more than $113 million worldwide. Godzilla Minus One also made history as it became the first Godzilla movie to win an Oscar, taking home Best Visual Effects.
Now, Godzilla Minus Zero is generating a strong reaction ahead of its release. While its Rotten Tomatoes score currently trails the original, the reviews remain largely positive. The movie is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release in November 2026.
