Fans hoping for a post-credits scene in Godzilla Minus Zero might be in for a disappointment. Following the success of Godzilla Minus One and the positive reception to its highly anticipated sequel, viewers might expect a mid-credits or post-credits scene teasing a third installment. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

The follow-up to Godzilla Minus One features neither a mid-credits nor a post-credits scene. While fans might have expected Godzilla Minus Zero to tease another sequel, especially given the franchise’s success and the introduction of King Ghidorah, there are no additional scenes once the movie ends.

Godzilla Minus Zero doesn’t set up the sequel fans were hoping for

Following the events of Godzilla Minus One, the second chapter, Godzilla Minus Zero, pits the iconic kaiju against King Ghidorah. A mid-credits or post-credits scene could have teased Godzilla’s next major threat after this battle. However, the film simply concludes with its show of Godzilla’s epic battle with King Ghidorah and how it ends.

That said, the absence of a post-credits scene doesn’t rule out the possibility of a third installment. Filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki recently addressed the possibility of turning the iconic film series into a trilogy, admitting that one of his biggest challenges would be coming up with a title for the next movie, should it receive the green light.

Speaking with TIME, Yamazaki joked about the progression, “We’ve gone from Minus One to Minus Zero, so we’re now neutral. That might be the biggest problem we have to solve if there is a sequel.”

Meanwhile, Godzilla Minus Zero continues to earn critical acclaim. Critics have praised its visual effects, calling it superior to those of its predecessor. The movie currently holds a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also grossed ¥910 million (US$5.8 million) on its opening day in Japan, setting a record for the biggest opening day for a live-action film in Japanese history, per Mantan Web.

The sequel’s strong critical and box office performance could improve the chances of a third installment moving forward. However, as of now, a third movie has yet to be officially announced.

Godzilla Minus Zero is playing in theaters now.
