Must be nice to be completely unaware of the financial realities of modern life!
Old age supposedly comes with more wisdom, but one of the biggest drivers of generational rifts between young people, baby boomers, and even older generations is that they seem allergic to understanding the realities of being a youngish adult in today's world. Sure, there are Zoomers and millennials who could do with giving a bit more sympathy to their elders, and there are older people who can empathize with the fact that things just aren't as simple as they were back in their day. Nonetheless, even the well-meaning can sometimes have a conception of the lives of youth today that couldn't be further from the truth.
We have all heard the complaints about avocado toast, but the misinformation goes even further than that. The reason that some believe an innocent brunch snack is getting in the way of their grandkids affording to buy a house is that they genuinely think that starter homes are close to the same price they were when they were the target market. This isn't to say that older people didn't have their struggles, too, but it is the unwillingness of many to understand the problems faced by those still trying to make it in the world that can leave them shocked when they are faced with the cold, hard facts. Even an expense as simple as the price of a tank of gas can be enough to expose how they are out of touch.
