Whenever you walk past a funny misspelled sign, think about how someone had to write it. Someone had to double-check it, and even triple-check it. Someone's boss approved it, and someone's boss's boss approved it too. Someone had to hang it at a store entrance. It seemed like it was going to be just another sign, but one incorrect letter got in the way. A comma jumped out of place, and a tiny space was not placed at all. That is all it takes. Now, someone's hard work has turned into a punchline that will keep them up at night and will keep us rolling with laughter. So, maybe next time you are the one who has to design one of these, get your trusty dictionary ready because clearly English can be a weird language.
I write for a living, and I have been in this position before (and keep coming back). Make a seemingly not-too-serious mistake and witness how your sentence goes from a linguistic piece of art to an unintentionally funny joke. A little typo, and now you will have to introduce yourself to your lasagna, instead of eating it. A two-second distraction, and you have given a whole different philosophical meaning to life and existence. But hey, at least you are not the only one. English misspellings are lurking everywhere, waiting for someone to have a moment of weakness, ending in unexpected masterpieces. Signs that were placed in the right spots, just not with the right words.
This collection will remind you that words might sound the same when you pronounce them, but they definitely do not mean the same thing. We are sorry to say this is all human-made; autocorrect can't be to blame this time. Although even when these friendly signs did not quite serve their original purpose, we can confidently say that they have become iconic nonetheless. Be a good student and share them with an English teacher in need of fixing some grammar!
