One of my biggest pet peeves in TV and film is a fake-out death. I think that they’re cheap gimmicks that totally remove any stakes and mostly just annoy me. They also usually have to make insane logic leaps to justify a character’s survival. Ones like Glenn’s dumpster dive on TWD and Hopper’s fake death on Stranger Things both just made me roll my eyes. Stranger Things, Invincible, and a lot of MCU movies relied on this trope way too much imo.
That made me wonder if there were any fake-out character deaths that people actually liked and thought served the story the best. The only one I could think of was The Hound on GOT. They didn’t specifically show him dying and only implied it would happen. When they actually bring him back, this experience serves as a big catalyst for growing his character and fully completing a great redemption arc.
Can you guys think of any others that you actually thought worked?
