Why is she so proud of the fact that her teenager doesn't know basic math? Is this a point of pride for some homeschoolers who don't seem to value education because they think they're too good for it?

I always get frustrated when adults complain that they didn't learn enough life skills in high school. I guarantee that if there were a life skills class where teenagers learned to cook basic meals and create a budget, they wouldn't pay much attention. School is valuable not just because it teaches you things you'll need in adult life, and many parents and students don't understand that. Many parents choose to homeschool their children so they can learn less than they would in a traditional classroom, because they don't see learning for learning's sake as important.
