The final match of a long and illustrious career for Sorana Cîrstea and the first tour semifinal for an Alexandra Shubladze!
Cîrstea ends her tennis journey with the best year of her career. A title on homeground at Cluj, a career-high ranking of 15, first win over a #1 at Rome, and many decent runs in the Slams this year. I'm sure many wonder why she would retire after finding this form, but she has left everything on the court this match, this tournament and this entire year. Watching her this week, I can truly see how much energy it must take to be on tour for an entire year. Year after year. She will enjoy life outside the grind and the intensity of the court.
Shubladze outplayed her today and fully deserves the win. She plays Liu in the semifinals!
