Leica and Formula 1 recently entered a new licensing agreement, and this is the first product to come out of the partnership: the Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition. Although it’s predominantly black like other cameras from Leica, the devil is in the details. The front surface is finished in a ‘Microvelour’ texture that supposedly mimics the feel of racing steering wheels.

There’s also the carbon fiber on the wireless-charging handgrip, soft-release shutter button, and thumbrest. That’s not printed plastic—Leica is using genuine carbon fiber made in Germany to drive home the motorsport influence. They don’t mention it anywhere on the spec sheet, but that’s probably a few grams worth of weight savings, right?

Like the stock Leica Q3 43, the Formula 1 Edition set includes the APO-Summicron 43 f/2 ASPH. lens, designed to replicate the human eye’s natural field of view. The camera still captures 60-, 36-, or 18-megapixel photos saved in DNG or JPG, and up to 17:9 cinematic widescreen 8K videos.

The F1 treatment also extends to the shooting experience with an exclusive Formula 1 Leica Look, available only on the Formula 1 Edition. In case you didn’t know, Leica Looks are color profile presets available both directly on the camera and on Leica’s proprietary Fotos app. The Formula 1 Leica Look is described as “a rendering that complements the world of motorsport” using “higher contrast and richer saturation.”

The Leica Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition was made available earlier this week, retailing for an eye-watering $9,950—equivalent to a cool P630,000. It’s definitely not the most expensive camera in Leica’s lineup (some lenses alone are worth even more)...but whew. Let us know what you think in the comments.
